ISVC 2020 – Real-time Simulation of Pixel-Headlights

At the 15th International Symposium on Visual Computing (ISVC 2020), the RST presented in the paper "Simulation of High-Definition Pixel-Headlights" a novel method that allows the visualization of the illumination of high-resolution pixel-headlamps in real time in commercial rendering engines.
For this purpose, the new method generates the projected illumination textures (colloquially called cookie) at runtime from a prepared data set which has been optimized for efficient memory access and data processing. Runtimes on a GPU of around 0.5 ms are possible with the new approach for more than one million individual headlight pixels.
This enables virtual test drives with high-resolution matrix headlights for the design and optimization of novel lighting functions.
